About
Fifty years asking one question
What is a man? Trevillion Ward Sr. spent more than fifty years in Oakland, California defining, analyzing and reshaping the answer. M2M is what came out of it.
The organization
The M2M Recovery Project
The MALE To MAN (M2M) RECOVERY PROJECT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides sober-living housing, mental health referral services, addiction recovery workshops, and community resources to support individuals on their journey to wellness and personal growth.
The From M.A.L.E. to M.A.N.© curriculum is the organization's sixteen-session group workshop, offered alongside that wider work.
The notion of manhood is complex and, more often than not, badly taught. Men inherit it from competition, from consumerism, from the pursuit of power and wealth — and very few people are invested enough to offer men anything constructive in its place.
M2M was written to fill that gap. Not as a definitive answer, and not as therapy, but as a structured way for men to identify, challenge, redefine and clarify what they actually believe about being a man — in a room with other men, over sixteen weeks.
The curriculum rests on the one approach that has ever reliably produced male maturity: self-examination. Everything in the sixteen sessions exists to make that examination unavoidable and survivable at the same time.

The men who modeled it
M2M is not theory borrowed from a lecture hall. It is drawn from men the author watched closely.
Mr. Lucky Cooper
The author's grandfather — the first man he saw demonstrate the essential characteristics of manhood across a whole lifetime.
Mr. Douglas Butler
Showed that humility and intelligence are quiet but durable sources of strength.
Mr. Ronald “Money” Haynes
Showed how physical and spiritual fitness preserve a man on earth and in heaven.
Mr. Robert “Joe Lewis” Sturgis
Showed how mental and physical fitness prepare a man for his destiny.
Mr. Eddie “Zaire” Haythorne
Showed what resilience and grace look like in old age.
Mr. Wayne Schonfeld
Showed what genuine friendship looks like despite the hard knocks along the way.
